The SUERC AMS Laboratory for environmental science is well equipped with two modern accelerator mass spectrometers and the spectrometry of six species is established: www.gla.ac.uk/suerc/ams Working with the other AMS staff, and partner radiocarbon and cosmogenic isotope groups, you will develop and apply these tools in pursuit of Centre science, and your own. Although focusing on a single field you will share responsibilities for routine and experimental work, liaison and administrative duties as required. You will have expertise in the instrumentation and techniques, or be familiar with AMS data and be willing and able to develop these.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship
U/Th/Pb radiochronology of secondary carbonates around nuclear waste disposal sites.

Applications are invited for a two years post-doctoral fellowship starting at the end of 2008 at CEREGE (Aix-en-Provence, France). The position will be funded by the French Agency for Nuclear Waste Management (ANDRA), with a salary of 2268€ per month.

The successful candidate will join a team of isotope geochemists with specific interest in U/Th disequilibrium systematics and U/Th/Pb geochronology, with recognized skills in Thermo-Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS).

The research will focus on radiometric dating of fluid circulations in the Paris basin sedimentary formations surrounding the ANDRA Underground Research Laboratory. The main objectives will be to date syn- to epi-diagenetic phenomena and fluid circulation events that occurred in the system, through U/Pb dating of secondary
carbonates. The main part of the work will consist in developing U-Pb isotopic analyses in secondary carbonate minerals by TIMS and MC-ICP-MS techniques.

The candidates should have expertise in TIMS and/or MC-ICP-MS mass spectrometry. Experience in U-Th or U-Pb geochemistry is recommended.

Molecular understanding of phosphorus dynamics in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems The interplay between biosphere and the environment is at the core of global climate change. Organic P compounds are key  eterminants of primary production in many terrestrial and most aquatic ecosystems. The ability for plants or microorganisms to utilize organic P is an important part of the P dynamics and has implications for ecosystem functioning. Knowledge on the speciation and reactivity of the organic P pool is thus a key issue in both terrestrial and aquatic science.
This project will create unique, molecular-scale knowledge about the transfer mechanisms between various biogeochemical pools of phosphorus in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The research will benefit a broad range of fundamental ecological and geochemical questions and will be an important contribution to the
application of NMR to natural samples and brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers.

• Develop methods for speciation of organic P in soils and freshwater ecosystems by means of different 31P NMR techniques.

• Apply the 31P NMR techniques on environmental samples to unravel the molecular details of how different organic P species in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems relate to vegetation, climate and microbial bioavailability.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field.

TITLE
Methodological development of natural deuterium abundance NMR spectroscopy in oriented solvents: Applications to investigation of the isotopic fractionation of small metabolites

Abstract
The socio-economic and bio-ethical aspects related to the analysis of metabolites that are important for health (fatty acids), the sale of new bio-active chiral substances or the control procedures in place at European level (legislation force, REACH projet…) require the continuous development of new analytical methods for analyzing chirality. In this area, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) 1H, 13C, 19F or 2H in polypeptides Chiral Liquid Crystals (CLCs), explored in our laboratory over the past ten years, has brought new and effective solutions [1], including the stereochemical analysis [2]. It is now a tool of choice used by many leader research groups in the world (Germany, UK, USA,…).
Among the different approaches developed, the Natural Abundance Deuterium NMR (DAN NMR) in the CLCs has proved to be extremely powerful [3]. Most recently, the combined use of an "high-field" (14 T) NMR spectrometer combined with a 2H selective cryoprobe has increased considerably the sensitivity of this method, and thus extend the application areas. This technology, unique in the world, allows the analysis of the DAN NMR spectra both in isotropic and anisotropic solvents [3,4]. The application of this strategy in the domain of the chirality but also for the determination of isotopic profiles (measuring the isotopic specific ratios, D/H) of natural products are immense. Among the major findings, it was shown that the study of the isotopic profile of fragments of Unsaturated Fatty Acids (UFA) [4,5] or complet (C-18) UFAs, such as the oleic or linoleic acid was now possible by NAD NMR [6]. Compared to the SNIF-NMR method (an internationally recognized method), which uses isotropic solvents, we are able, through the use of CLC, to separate almost all deuterium sites of UFA’s, including numerous enantiotopic directions [6]. The ability to measure the isotopic ratios of enantiotopic sites in the UFAs provide unique information that should allow to understand the effects kinetic isotope and/or define the stereoselectvity of enzymatic processes involved in the biosynthesis of UFAs (fatty acid desaturases).
The proposed work on this type of metabolites is threefold. It will: i) find an ideal mesophase chiral (co-solvents, polypeptides) and the optimal experimental conditions (T, concentration) to spectrally discriminate all inequivalent deuterium sites of unsaturated FAMEs, but also of saturated precursors (stearic acid, palmitic,…); ii) the possibility of carrying out quantitative measurements directly in CLCs, either through the use of tetramethylurea (TMU) as internal isotope reference, or the development of the electronic method "ERETIC" cryoprobe; iii) propose new solutions to further increase the sensitivity of NMR DAN experiences in the CLC (method of co-variance, transfer of polarization,…). The first project will be carried out in conjunction with Isabelle Billault of CEISAM (University of Nantes), a specialist in biochemistry.
In addition, in collaboration with Gérald Remaud of CEISAM (University of Nantes), another important applications of DAN NMR in the CLC are envisaged, especially in the field of fighting against frauds on synthetic products (synthetic vanillin sold for natural vanillin, chaptalization,….) or in determining the geographic origin or natural botanical drugs (nicotine, extasy,….).

The Laser Laboratory of the Center for Isotope Research (CIO) of the Faculty of Sciences, the University of Groningen, invites application for two

Graduate Research (PhD) "Ubbo Emmius" Scholarships in Laser Spectroscopy in the Environmental Sciences

The PhD thesis research projects focus on:

(1) The further development and field-application of an existing ultra-sensitive infrared laser spectrometer for the determination of the isotopic composition of atmospheric water vapor. Both ground based and airborne operation of the spectrometer is foreseen.

(2) Miniaturization and automation of a multiple pass gas cell based spectrometer and its application to measurements of water isotope ratios in support of ice-core research (paleoclimate reconstruction) and ecological (plant leaf respiration) and geophysical (volcanic emission) studies.

The Laser Laboratory of the CIO is internationally renowned for its pioneering activities in the field of optical isotope ratio measurements. The research programs are carried out in collaboration with a number of other research groups, both in The Netherlands and outside (in particular the University of Grenoble in France, the University of Naples in Italy, and the NASA Ames research center in California).
We are seeking individuals with outstanding research potential and initiative. The successful candidate ideally has experience with molecular spectroscopy or atmospheric research, and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. A good command of the English language is expected.
The candidate is not required to teach and can thus dedicated 100% of the available time to research. The monthly remuneration amounts to approximately 1547 euro after taxes (~19k to 26k euro gross per yr, depending on age). The appointments are for up to 4 years and start in September 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Post Doctoral Research and two Graduate Research Scholarships in Arctic Plant Physiological Ecology at The University of Alabama, USA.

We are seeking a post doctoral researcher and two graduate students to work on a an NSF funded interdisciplinary project looking at the winter physiological processes in two arctic tundra ecosystems under current and simulated climate change scenarios. Northern latitudes are thought to be sequestering CO2 emitted from anthropogenic activities.  However, the status of these ecosystems as a global sink of C in the future hinges upon the physiological responses of ecosystem components to changes in climate.  There is overwhelming evidence for rapid climate change in the Arctic. Changes include the physical environment, changes in carbon balance, vegetation change. Furthermore, warming in the high latitudes is predicted to predominantly occur in the winter, and climate data support that prediction.  However, the vast majority of research on tundra vegetation has focused on physiological processes during the short 2-3 month growing season, with only a handful of studies of physiological processes during the 9-10 month cold season.  Although the rates of these processes are low, summed over the long cold season they are extremely important. A comprehensive understanding of cold-season physiological processes of tundra vegetation is critically needed given the large potential for further climate changes in the Arctic.


For the Post Doctoral Fellowship:
Applicants should possess a PhD in plant physiological ecology, plant ecology, or plant physiology.  The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with stable isotopes and a strong background in environmental instrumentation (i.e. LI-COR photosynthetic systems, Campbell Scientific Data loggers and Weather Stations).  Project management experience would be a plus.  Annual salary is $42,500 plus benefits.  The initial appointment is for one year, extendable subject to performance, for an additional two years.


For Graduate Research Assistantships:
The applicants research interests should focus on plant ecophysiology, ecosystem physiology, or plant ecology. General knowledge of LI-COR photosynthetic equipment, Campbell Scientific equipment and application of stable isotopes to plant physiological ecology is a plus.

The UCDavis Stable Isotope Facility houses 10 PDZEuropa/Sercon 20-20 IRMS instruments, two Thermo Finnegan Delta V IRMS systems, and a Varian Saturn Ion trap analytical MS-MS.  Associated sample preparation systems include 4 combustion elemental analyzers, TCEA, 3 trace gas analyzers, GC-C-IRMS, TOC/TIC –IRMS, and LC-C-IRMS.  The facility operates on a fee per sample basis and is currently analyzing in excess of 150,000 samples per year.
The candidate will manage all aspects of the operation; this includes (a) supervising the staff (currently 6), overseeing maintenance, (b) planning for ongoing enhancement of equipment and capabilities, (c) improving data management and quality control procedures, and (d) providing consultation to users on experimental design and other aspects of stable isotope use such as detection limits and sample preparation.  There will be opportunities to conduct independent and collaborative research in stable isotope methodologies and applications.  We are particularly interested in candidates with good instrument and chemistry skills who would encourage development of new analytical methods.  Familiarity with LIMS (laboratory information management systems) is also desirable.
Qualifications:  Applicant should have a PhD degree in Physical or Life Sciences or extensive practical experience.  The candidate must have good instrument skills and good communication skills.  Expertise in mass spectrometry is required and in some form of isotope ratio mass spectrometry is highly desirable.
Salary:  The salary will be in the range $50,000 – $80,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications: Applicant should have a degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or Life Sciences or extensive practical experience.  The candidate should have good instrument skills. Expertise in some form of isotope ratio mass spectrometry is desirable but not essential.
